Personal Journal - 3rd Evening-Summer
I had planned this midday to try something new. There is one event each day at which every resident in Azul is gathered in the same spot, to celebrate the rising of the starpool. At that time all their attention is rapt, and the usually bustling town falls into silence. I normally avoid these gatherings, but I intended today to join them, and perhaps use the opportunity to address a captive crowd.
However, when I arrived (a little late, I am still unsure how they keep track of the changing times of this ceremony so accurately), the solemnity of the gathering gave me pause. I watched from behind the townsfolk, who congregate on a raised stone platform, and from that vantage point, I had a clear view of the starpool through the two great columns which are the largest structures in Azul. It seems they were built with this purpose in mind.
What I had not yet appreciated was the fact that the Somin are also present at this ceremony, although they do not have to move far in order to attend it. The building in which they live has a tower with an open room through which they can be seen, silhouetted against the sky behind. The sight heightened that strange detached feeling that has been coming to me lately, and I realised suddenly how brash my idea to address this crowd had been. To my shame, I found myself averting my eyes and walking away.
I've now decided that I will carry out my plan to journey away from Azul for a while. I might gather my things and trade for a few provisions at first light tomorrow. I am excited at the prospect of travelling once more, and the feeling lifts me up somewhat.
